Research and Planning- 2 film magazine analysis's

Magazine analysis 1-The Bourne Legacy

The genre for this text is a Film Magazine and the film being advertised on the cover is a Action/thriller film.

We can tell that it is a magazine because it has:

  • A Masthead across the top which tells us the name of the magazine
  • A banner and positioning statement saying "Our most action-packed issue ever!"
  • The issue number, date of sale and price near the "M" at the top of the cover
  • A main coverline saying "bigger, better, badder renner!" and some smaller coverlines such as "Hawkeye goes hardcore in summer's smartest sequel"
  • use of the three colour rule - uses red, black and white
  • largest font sizes are used for masthead and main coverline and smaller font is used for smaller coverlines and the issue number, date and price.
However there doesn't seem to be a Barcode on this magazine which is commonly seen on most other magazines but missing from this one.

It is very clear from looking at this magazine that it is a film magazine because all the coverlines are film related and the main story is about "The Bourne Legacy" which is a film. Also the main big picture used for the cover of the magazine is a shot taken from The Bourne Legacy movie.

On the cover it says "action" and the image shows an actor dressed in black and holding a gun. From these things we can safely say that the narrative for this film is action and involves chases and guns. In the image the man is crouched on the floor and so may be hiding from someone. The background of the image shows a wall and then a little bit of the outdoors and so this suggests he maybe in an underground car park or abandoned warehouse and these are both conventional of this action genre of film.

The man in the picture is wearing black and this connotes bad or evil and kinda suggests he maybe the bad guy or villain in the film. Also the fact he is holding a gun suggests he is powerful and has high status. His facial expression is very serious and borders on a frown or evil look and this backs up the idea of him being a villain. He is looking directly at us down the camera and this helps us the audience get on the same level as him and relate to him more.

The target audience is probably teenagers mostly male because action films like this normally appeal to males more than females. Also the main character is a male and has a gun which appeals more to teenage boys than girls.

The shot type used on the magazine cover is a medium shot showing the main guy in focus and the background out of focus. This suggests he doesn't belong in his surroundings and feels uneasy and uncomfortable there. Also the shot is from an eye level which helps us relate to him more so we the audience are on his side. The mise-en-scene of the gun instantly gives the guy power and is a common convention of action/thriller films. The layout features such as a masthead and positioning statement tells us the media text we are looking at is a Film magazine.

Magazine analysis 2- The Dark Knight Rises

The genre for this text is a Film Magazine and the film being advertised on the cover is a Action/thriller film.

We can tell that it is a magazine because it has:

  • A Masthead across the top which tells us the name of the magazine
  • A banner across the top saying "The ultimate batman issue"
  • The date of sale, issue number and website near the masthead
  • The three colour rule- uses light bronze, white and black
  • A main coverline saying "The dark knight rises" and smaller coverlines such as "Tim Burton writes exclusively for you"
  • A Barcode in the bottom right hand corner of the page
  • The largest font size is reserved for the masthead and main coverline and smaller font sizes are used for the smaller coverlines and issue name and date.
However there is no price which is normally seen on magazine covers but is missing from this one. This cover is also missing a positioning statement.

It is very clear from looking at this magazine that it is a film magazine because all the coverlines are film related and the main story is about "The Dark Knight Rises" which is a film. Also the main big picture used for the cover of the magazine is a shot of Batman taken from the movie.

On the cover the background of the image looks as though it is outer space or on a different planet and this suggests that the narrative may not all take place on Earth and there may be some aliens in the narrative as well. Also Batman is positioned is the middle of the page and this shows he is the main character and is central to the narrative.

Batman is wearing mostly all black and this suggests he maybe a villain or bad character as blank normally connotes evil or death. Also he is stood up very straight and this shows he has authority and demands respect. His facial expression in the picture shows he means business and is quite serious and not laid back.

The target audience would be people who like the Batman comics or the previous Batman movies such as The Dark Knight. The audience would also probably be teenagers and adults as oppose to children because this image suggests Batman has taken a more darker turn and is quite grown up.

The shot type used is a Medium shot showing Batman is the foreground and what looks like outer-space in the background. The shot is an eye-level shot and Batman is shows looking directly at us and this helps us the audience relate to him more and be on his side in the narrative. For the mise-en-scene Batman is wearing all his armour and protection and looks ready for a fight and this may suggest there is fights in the film.

The layout features used such as a banner and the three colour rule tells us the media text we are looking at is a Film magazine.
