Research and planning-SLR tests shot

These are some shots we took with an SLR camera of random scenes that are included in our trailer
This is a high angle shot showing his vulnerability which we can use in our trailer when he realises he has gone a little mad.
This is a low angle shot that shows him as quite powerful and superior. Also the dark shadowy look of this picture adds to its mystery and this would be a good effect for us to try and achieve in our actual trailer
This shot is a light high angle meduim/close up on the main character with his head in hi hands. This shows him as quite small and weak and quite worried
This is a mirror shot like the one we will have at the beginning of our trailer. The fact we can slightly see someone else in the mirror could be a good thing because he is not mentally stable and could be shown as seeing things
This shot is another showing him in the mirror like we need at the beginning. However I prefer the one just above.
This is medium close up like we will use at the end of our trailer when the main character gets up and films himself confessing to the killings.

Research and planning-audition poster

This is what our audition poster looks like:

Research and planning-meeting post-update

Today me and my partner Nyle discussed when to hold auditions for our film trailer and decided o  a final date for this to take place. We will be holding auditions from 12:15-1:15 pm on 4th December 2012.

Also we discussed more about when we are both free so we could film but then couldn't figure out when the rest of our cats would be free and so came to the conclusion that we would have to wait till we find our entire cast through the auditions and then find out if there is a time when everyone involved is free so we can then decide on a final date to start filming on.

Research and planning-Plan for this week

This week I plan to:

  • Conduct auditions for roles on the film teaser trailer with Nyle
  • Do some head shots for actors we could possibly use and actors we won't be using and why
  • Complete audition poster
  • Do some test shots for our trailer with Nyle
  • Do research on possible fonts to use for magazine masthead

Research and planning-Font for Masthead

After doing research on fonts for the Masthead of my film magazine and looking at Mastheads on existing film magazines such as Total Film and Empire I have decided that the font I will be using for my Film magazine masthead will be

Font: Market Deco from dafont website

Research and planning-font ideas for film magazine masthead

I needed some ideas on font I was going to use for the Masthead of my film magazine- Climax. I looked through dafont and then found some font ideas and these are some screenshots for possible fonts I could use.

Research and planning-Film magazine name ideas

Today we were asked to think of a title for our film magazine.

I came up with the following ideas:

  • FILM
  • Climax
  • Oscars
  • Screen
  • The box
  • Box
From these ideas I have decided that my film magazine will be called

Climax

I like this title because it is a film term but not one that it too complictated to understand. Also everyone including people who don't study Media will know what is meant by Climax.

Research and planning-test shots showing times we could film our evening/night time scenes

For our trailer we will be doing quite a lot of shooting in the evenings for a low key lighting effect and to match the connotations of a thriller trailer. Because of this I decided to track the light conditions from 3 pm to 8 pm today (25/11/2012) so that I could find out when the best times would be to shoot dark scenes and also to find out how far into the night we can film before it gets to dark to see anything. Below are the test shots I took at different points today.

This is the photo from 3:00 pm

The lighting is very good is this picture but not at all suitable for night or evening scenes and shots and so we will avoid shooting our darker scenes at this time as it is too light.

This is the photo from 4:00 pm

This picture is a tiny bit darker but not much different to the one above and so we will have to shoot our dark scenes later than 4 pm in order to get the right lighting.

This is the photo from 5:00 pm

Between the hours of 4 and 5 pm it has suddenly got considerably darker as shown in the image above. This picture is sort of dark but still light enough for us to see what we are doing and so 5 pm may be a good time to film our night time shots.

This is the photo from 6:00 pm

As you can see this picture is darker and more gloomy than the one above. Also the lighting at this time suits very well with what we require for our dark scenes and so 6 pm may also be a good time to film the scenes where we need dark lighting.

This is the photo from 7:00 pm

There isn't much change in lighting between this image and the one above it and so 7:00 may also be a good time to film evening scenes for our thriller film trailer.

This is the photo from 8:00 pm

This image is significantly darker than the two above it and you can't see much of the image as there is hardly any light. Because of this I don't think we'll be able to film at 8 pm as it is too dark to see what we are doing and therefore anything we film would pretty much come out in pitch darkness which means we'd just be wasting our time.

From doing these shots today and tracking the amount of light as the evening goes on I have learnt that the best times for us to film any dark evening shots will be between 5-7 pm as this is when it is dark enough to call it evening or night time but not too dark so we can't see what were doing. Also the latest we can film into the night will be around 7-7:30 pm.

Research and planning-audience feedback for drafts of film magazine and poster

After drawing out my drafts for the film magazine and poster I decided to post links to them on my Facebook page in order to get feedback on them and to find out what people think of my designs so far. Below is a screenshot of my audience feedback.

Research and planning-test shots-times we could possibly shoot our daylight scenes

I took this picture from near where I live at 08:01 am (in the morning) on the 20th November 2012 and the lighting seems fine and suitable to film daylight scenes.

Also I took another image at 09.41 am (in the morning) on the 24th November 2012. Again the lighting looks quite suitable for us to film any daylight scenes

From doing this I have learnt that a good an pretty much ideal time for us to film morning daylight scenes showing the main character waking up and going outside of his house would be around 8:00 am to 10:00. If we filmed any later than this it might get too bright or the sun might come out and this will make it harder for us to convince the audience that these shots are supposed to be showing the morning.

Research and planning-extra research and test shots on locations

I went out and walked around the area near where I live to get a bit of inspiration for more possible location and here are the pictures I took of areas that suit well in our trailer.

We could use this area as an alleyway.

We could use this area as a place for when the main character is running out of house scared near the beginning of the trailer

could use this as a shot outside the main characters house

Also outside main characters house. looks slightly canted which adds to the effect and idea the character is on edge.

Research and planning-genre post-Cinematography used in thriller/action films

For the film trailer I am in charge of Cinematography and so I decided to do some research about what kind of Cinematography is typically seen in thriller/action films.

I found that they use lots of handheld camera work as well as long shots which are usually filmed using a tripod.

Through watching many thriller films such as Taken I have noticed that there is no use of panning shots and so we will not be using any panning shots for our trailer.

Also in lots of thriller trailers they have high angle shots on the good guy to show his vulnerability and low angle shots on the villain to show how much power he has compared to the good guy especially at the beginning to the narrative and so we will be including high angle and low angle shots as well in our trailer.

They also use some close ups so show a characters reaction to an event that has occurred and we too will be using some close ups in our trailer.

Also in our trailer we will be using a variety of shots, some with tight framing and some that look quit free with lots of space.

Canted shots are used quite often in thriller films and were famously used in The Bourne Identity which is a high action film and we too will have some shots using a canted angle.

Point of views shots would be very useful in a thriller as they help us see the events unfolding from the point of view of the protagonist (main character/hero) and so we will also be using these in our thriller film trailer.

research and planning-Update: Film name and Tagline

Me and Nyle just had another discussion about our film name and tagline and have finally decided on something

Our film name is: SOME BODY

and our tagline will be: I'd kill to know who I am

Research and planning-genre post-Mise-en-scene used in thriller/action films

For the film trailer I am in charge of Mise-en-scene and so I decided to do some research about what kind of Mise-en-scene is typically seen in thriller/action films.

I found that they use quite a lot of weapons for different scenes throughout. However I don't think that we could do this in our trailer because it would be hard to get our hands on weapons like guns and knifes and use them convincingly.

Also there is little or no makeup use in thriller/action films and so we wont be using any makeup in our film trailer.

Quite a lot of trailers for action/thriller films have a blue tinge on them and I think this would be quite a good idea for our trailer.

The costumes normally used in thriller/action films in casual clothing and nothing too eccentric and so we will be also using casual normal clothes for the actors in our trailer.

Also there is not much high key lighting in most thriller trailers I've seen and so we will be keeping high key lighting in our trailer to a minimum in order to fit in with conventions.

Research and planning-costume and props list for film poster and magazine

Magazine cover

Casual clothing for the main character to wear on the magazine cover- could be a black leather jacket, and dark jeans. The dark clothes will be appreciated as it fits in with the colour scheme used on my magazine. Also I chose to use a leather jacket as it is quite conventional for thriller and action films.

similar to images below:

casual shoes or converse/sneakers for main character to wear. These will be a dark colour also and suit well with the jacket and jeans

Will also be using a light set of clothing-possibly white

Film Poster

Casual clothing for the main character to wear on the film poster- could be brown or black jacket and dark jeans as shown in image above. The dark clothing here represents the bad side of the character and shows him to be a bit of a villain.

checked shirt-lighter colour. This lighter clothing shows the god and innocent side of the main character and having both these conflicting messages on the poster should leave the audience undecided as to whether or not he is a bad character or not.

light coloured trousers- This lighter colour trouser represents the good side of the character and contradicts the darker clothing previously used.

Blood or ketchup to create blood for the killing scenes and to put on the girl for the photo to make it realistic.

A fake knife to lay next to the girl for the photo

6 photos-also used in the trailer-will make myself

Cost/expense

leather jacket- we may borrow this from one of the cast members so get a cheap one from a charity shop

Black trousers- we will be using one that belongs to our actor

Black converse -I have converse shoes that we can use

Brown jacket-Borrow off cast member or buy a cheap one

light checkered shirt- one of my friends has one of these so I will be asking to borrow this from him

light coloured trousers- borrow off my cast member

blood-ketchup-will buy £1-2

A fake knife-borrow off my partner nyle

light set of clothing-provided by main actor
