Evaluation: Question 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media technologies used in the construction of the film poster, magazine and trailer

Adobe Photoshop

I used Adobe Photoshop to create my film poster and film magazine. I had some previous experience on this software as I used it last year in order to create my magazine for AS year Media and so I felt more confident on it this year and was able to  experiment more with tools such as layer effects in order to create the kind of poster and magazine I wanted.

Image Capture

I used this program in order to transfer images from the SLR camera and the canon camera that I had taken for my film poster and magazine. It was a similar programme to iPhoto that I used last year and was very easy to use.

iMovie

Even though I did not directly use this programme as my roles were mise en scene and cinematography which didn't require me to use it I know that we used this program in order to edit our film trailer. This program was very useful as it allowed us to split clips, add sound specifically where we wanted it and change some of our clips to black and white to show they are flashbacks from the past. I will also be using this programme in the evaluation.

Garageband

Again even though I did not directly use this programme as my roles were mise en scene and cinematography which didn't require me to use it I know that this programme was used in order to create all the non-diegetic sounds and music that was used in our film trailer. This programme was very useful because it allowed us to use lots of different instruments digitally on a computer in order to add tension and suspense to the trailer.

SLR camera

I used the SLR camera to take photos of the main character in our film for use on my film poster and film magazine. I had experience with these cameras last year in AS media and so this time around I was able to take good quality focused photos fairly quickly and could work the camera very easily.

Mini DV camcorder

We used the DV camcorder to film our teaser trailer for the thriller film. We each were assigned a tape to record all of our footage on. Although I haven't ever used one before I picked it up very quickly and was able to film using this camcorder fairly easily as it was simple to use.

Media technologies used in the Research and Planning and Evaluation stages of the film poster, magazine and trailer

Blogger

I used Blogger to document all the Research and Planning I did in order to create my film poster, magazine and trailer. I also used it to record all the progress and drafts of my film poster and magazine whilst creating them. I also added extra genre research posts and independent research posts to my Blogger to help with the creation of my media products. I used Blogger before in AS media and found so had previous experience on it. Also the website itself is very straightforward and easy to use.

Prezi

I used Prezi to do some brainstorming into ideas for my publication plan before I created my film magazine. Also I used it to present ideas for magazine coverlines. I had used this programme before in AS level and so was fairly confident with it this time around.

Microsoft Powerpoint

I used Microsoft Powerpoint to create the pitch for the film trailer  including details on the mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing as well as a few ideas on genre and narrative. I will also be using Powerpoint for some parts of the evaluation.I have a lot of previous experience on Powerpoint last year in Media and on my AS  level ICT course at college and so I found it very easy to use.

Microsoft Word

I used Microsoft Word to write up my location recces, risk assessments, actor release forms and shot lists for my poster, magazine and trailer. I have lots of experience on Word and have used it for many years and so found it very easy to use this time.

Microsoft Excel

I used Microsoft Excel to do my Production Schedule. This document was useful as it gave me a plan of dates I could stick to to get each task completed throughout the year. I have had previous experience on Excel but I used them to create spreadsheets instead but the basics were still the same and so I found this programme very simple to use for the task I had to do.

Slideshare

I used this website to upload the powerpoint presentations for my pitch and parts of my Evaluation questions onto the internet and then embedded the slideshares into Blogger posts. I haven't used this site before but found it fairly easy to use and a useful website.

Word it out

I used this website to brainstorm ideas for the genre of our film trailer and to think of ideas for what conventional things we should include in the trailer to make it fit the genre. I had never used this site before but found it very easy to understand and a useful site to brainstorm ideas on.

Solvr

I used this website to list ideas for possible names for the film trailer we were going to create. I found this useful as I could just type in any idea or bit of an idea and that could eventually lead to a wide range of options for the title. I had not used this site before but I found it very simple to use and very straightforward to record my ideas.

iShowU

I used this program to create podcasts showing how far I had got at different stages of the year by going through my blog and narrating throughout to explain what I had done on each post. Also I did an ishowU podcast with my partner Nyle where we both talked through our blog and decisions we made together for the film trailer we created.  I had previously used this program in AS year and so found it very easy to use.

Canon camera

I used the canon camera to take some test shots and some photos of the sets used in the trailer. I also used it to take pictures of the written audience feedback we received from the screenings of our film trailer to upload to Blogger.

Facebook

I used Facebook in order to gather feedback from my target audience about my film poster and magazine. I found this feedback very helpful as it told me which bits people liked and which bits needed improving and ways in which they could be improved. I use Facebook on  regular basis and so am very familiar with it and so using it for gathering feedback was really easy and straightforward.

Internet

I used the internet to do some genre research for the film trailer we made.  Also I used Youtube to search for thrillers trailers such as law abiding citizen and memento for inspiration on the types of shots and scenes to include in the trailer.

IshowU video showing the technologies I used for the Research and planning and evaluation stages of my media products

Video showing me explaining the use of the camcorder which I used to film the trailer

In this video I explain the different functions and buttons on the camcorder and what each of them do.
Also in the video I forgot to mention about us using a tripod for some of the shots especially in the bedroom and on the laptop scene. We did this by attaching the camcorder to the top of the tripod and this was very useful for the steady camera scenes.

Evaluation: Question 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I used iMovie to show all the different bits of feedback that I got from my teaser trailer, film poster and film magazine and explained how these impacted on my work and how they helped me make my work better.

The feedback discussed in this video

Facebook feedback (social networking feedback)

Throughout the creation of my film poster and magazine I regularly put up them both up on Facebook asking for different  bits of feedback from my audience including strengths, weaknesses, areas for improvement and representation of the thriller genre. All the feedback I got back was very useful and enabled me to keep improving my poster and magazine at lots of different stages.

Audience interviews video

At the beginning of the year we conducted some audience interviews for help while creating the trailer. These interviews were good because they helped us shape which convention of the thriller genre we could use based on what our audience expect to see in a thriller trailer. Also these audience interviews were very useful as they helped us think about the basics we needed to include in the teaser trailer.

Feedback from other media students

Twice in the process of creating our media products we did screenings to the rest of our class of them asking for feedback and ways to improve. This feedback was very useful as it gave us a fresh new look on our work from other people who also studied media and so understand what is needed for a professional looking teaser trailer, film poster and film magazine.

Other feedback that helped with the creation of my 3 media products

Proposals -We came up with two different ideas for a plot for the trailer and discussed the
the mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography and sound that we would use for creating each one. We then asked our media teacher which  one she liked the best and this onewas the idea that we went forward with and developed into a treatment.

Tagline Ideas - We found it hard to think of a tagline for or film and so I posted a status on Facebook asking for some tagline ideas and one person suggested 'I'd kill to know who I am' and we both liked this one and so decided to use it for our film poster.

Magazine Tagline - When it cameto creating the film magszine I thought of the title 'Climax' but couldn't think of a suitable tagline/positioning statement for this and so I asked my tutor for some ideas and we threw arounda few ideas and came to 'For the final word in all that is film' and I really liked this and so decided to use it.

Teacher Feedback for Angela - Angela's feedback was incredible useful and relevant throughout the creation of all of my media products. From the beginning she understood the kind of narrative we wanted and gave us some existing trailer with more ideas in order to improve ours. Also she liked the Law abiding citizen poster which is the one I modelled my poster on and gave me more ideas on how to make mine look more like this one and more of the thriller genre. Also when creating my film magazine she suggested that I add a question mark on the main images this would help hint at the narrative of the main film the magazine was advertising with was the thriller teaser trailer we were making.

Evaluation- Question 2-Vox pop interviews with my audience

Here are some vox pop interviews I did with my target audience asking them about how effective they think my three media products are together in advertising the same film.

From doing these vox pop interviews I found that my target audience think that my three media products are fairly effective in advertising the same film as they all include the main actor Dan and his face can clearly be seen across all three media products.

However they felt that the some of the colours and fonts used throughout could be a little more consistent in order to increase the effectiveness of the teaser trailer, film poster and film magazine.

Evaluation: Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

This in an video that I made on iMovie talking about how my three media products effectively work together to promote the same film and what similarities can be seen across all three of them.

In the video I talked about:

Colours and lighting: On the trailer we used lots of dark shots and low key lighting especially for the establishing shot and beginning scenes. This dark colour and lighting can also be seen in the poster through the little lighting used on the photo and the blue tinge across the poster and also this can be seen on the magazine in the corners of the image to show the dark thriller feel.

Fonts: In the trailer, poster and magazine I used a white font in all three of them. Also the title on all three media products is written in CAPITALS  As well as this on the poster and teaser trailer the same steeltongs section was used. Also on the magazine and poster the 'Impact' font is used for some of the text.

Mise-en-scene: On the trailer we used some blue objects in the bathroom scene and this colour is also shown on the poster through the blue tint and also in the corners of the magazine. Also the photos used in the trailer can also be seen in the poster inside the font used for the title

Cinematography and shot types: The shots types used on the trailer is similar to the one used on the poster as they both show close up shots of the main character. Also the shot types used in the trailer match the main image on the magazine as both used medium long shots as well.

Representation of characters: There is lots of ambiguity surrounding the hero/villain and this is shown in the teaser trailer, the film poster and the film magazine. Also the representation of the victim is consistent throughout as the victim is a female (girl) as seen in  the trailer and the poster.

Binary opposites: The hero/villain, good/ bad character types in the trailer are the same in each of the media products. The hero is dan. The villain could also possibly be dan and the good character is clearly the innocent girl Faith.

Narrative and genre: The plotline of the film about a guy who has problems with his memory is seen in the film trailer, film poster and film magazine. Also the thriller genre can clear be seen in all three media products.

Location: The location of the street can be seen from the image on the film magazine and on the filming used on the teaser trailer. However the location is not seen on the poster.

Target audience: The target audience for our film is a 15 as seen on the film poster. However this is not shown on the trailer or magazine.

Research and planning-last minute changes to script for film trailer

Me and partner Nyle have decided to add a voiceover to our trailer from the main character's point of view instead of having so many titles during the trailer. Today we worked together to come up with a longer script for the main character to say during the trailer. This is the script we came up with:

My name is Dan. I don't remember what happened last.

Erm..I opened my eyes and now suddenly am here. I don't know who to trust. Should I trust you, him or even myself?

Maybe its best to trust no one.

How can I carry on living like this? Continually questioning everything that happened or didn't happen.

Was it real or was I dreaming?

Maybe my whole life is a dream.

Why can't I just go back,... back to the very beginning.

My name is Dan. I don't remember what happened last.

Have I already told you this before?

Research and planning- creating the REC effect on photoshop

Whilst editing the trailer we decided to use a camera REC effect where it looks like the shot is taken from a live recording using a video camera. In order to do this we used Adobe Photoshop to create the video recording camera frame. This is what it looks like.

We now plan to use this image in imovie to put on top of the video diary shot to create the video camera effect we wanted.

Research and planning-working on my film poster

This is my film poster after doing the changes needed based on my audience feedback.

I have changed my tagline colour to white instead of red as it makes it stand out a little more as one of my audience member said that the previous red colour was lost in the background. Also I changed the font used for my release date as it looked a little sci-fi and so now I changed the font so its looks thriller instead.

Research and planning- soclal network feedback on my film poster and magazine cover

I asked my audience for feedback on my magazine and poster and this is what they said:
From this feedback I know to improve my work I need to:

  • change the 'Feburary 18th'  font to something that looks a little more thriller instead of sci-fi
  • change poster tagline colour to white instead of red to make it easier to read and make it bigger

Research and planning-working on my film magazine

Today I did some finishing touches to my film magazine. This is what it now looks like.

I added a gradient event on the background image to make my masthead stand out more. Also I added a coverline to the top of my magazine as there was a little white space there and moved my issue number and date down to the bottom of the page near the barcode.

Research and planning-update on main actor

Me and my partner Nyle planned to do the rest of our filming at some point last week or on Monday this week. Unfortunately our main actor Dan is still ill and not in college so we weren't able to finish our filming yet. We hope to get it done for the end of this week depending on whether Dan gets well or not.
