Research and planning-Film genres and conventions


Horror

In a horror film you expect to see lots of blood and gore. Also there are weapons such as knifes in many horror films. As well as this you often hear a lot of screaming. Also there is lots of low-key lighting and many uses of shadows throughout. Also they have twisted plot-lines and are set in dark places or maybe haunted houses. As well as this there is usually a twist at the end.




Comedy

They have a narrow target audience a lot of the time. Also they don't have very serious messages and have a light hearted feel to them. They use a lot of high key lighting throughout. As well this this they are often divided into different types of comedy such as teen comedy, romantic comedy and social comedies (also known as sit-coms) Also many comedies can cause offence to certain groups of people such as asian people or disabled people. There main target audience is usually teenagers around the age of 15.



Romance

Romance films are mainly aimed at a female audience. They always contain some form of relationship and love story. They contain many clichés and the guy and girl almost always get together in the end. Most end with a happy ending. Also they are set in a nice romantic sunny location. They use lots of soft music and high key lighting. They have disagreements, arguments and lover's tiffs that always get resolved in the end. 



Adventure

Pirates of the Caribbean

Adventures films always contain a hero, villain and princess character. Also the hero always wins in the end and the villain loses. They are usually filmed on exotic unique locations and have very high budgets. Also the hero always comes across some form of obstacle they they have to overcome during the course of the narrative. Many of them contain special effects and lots of action stunts. They often also have a damsel in distress character. There is likely to be a least one chase scene in the film. They normally use high key lighting to show a natural look to the film. Also during chase scenes they use loud fast paced music.
